About

“I was hooked from Katie's first hauntingly sweet note, her voice so rich and earthy...it's the type of voice that demands attention. Katie Milae's music radiated a deeply soulful presence.."
- MATT ERDELY / ALL OVER ADELAIDE

Growing up aside the tropics of Darwin and immersing herself in Australia’s cultural and spiritual centre meant that for Katie Milae there was no shortage of inspiration and music was unavoidable.

Her free adventurous spirit has led her on a life full of creativity and adventure. From hand raising and wrangling crocodiles as a keeper in Darwin, sharing the amazing transformative beauty of the Katherine Gorge on boat tours, spending months on end hand harvesting pearls off the Kimberley Coast and adopting a nomadic lifestyle to travel the world. She has been inspired by lessons learnt and touched by the souls she has met. It is these experiences and her passion of adventure that are weaved throughout her music.

Milae has a way with words that gets into your bones and finds its way into your soul. People are in disbelief of Katie Milae’s self-taught talent as her voice is often compared to the raspy soulful tones of Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin and contrasting earthy sounds of Matt Corby. Katie’s unique and ethereal voice is a testimony to her success as an Indie Folk and Soulful singer songwriter. Her music is forever evolving as she continually pushes the boundaries of her many talents.

Milae has performed across numerous venues and festivals in South Australia, completed a successful tour of the East Coast of Australia in 2019 (and has since become a Sunshine Coast Local) and also represented Australia in China at the Xintiandi Festival in Shanghai.

Milae’s release of her first single ‘Melancholy’ in 2019, garnered a lot of attention for its haunting, ethereal, Indie Folk sound, including her debut spin on Triple J.

While Milae says she still loves to create Indie Folk music, she’s also always looking for ways she can push her boundaries and grow as an artist, and this is what her collaboration with Christian Patey on ‘Molasses Skies’ has been for her.

‘Molasses Skies’ mixes drifty, layered, melodic vocals with smooth electric guitar rifts reminiscent of Tash Sultana’s early works.
Even though the production differs from Milae’s usual style, her poetic, “melancholic” songwriting still echoes through this track. An anthem for those who can’t seem to catch a break with love, it’s an easy, smooth song to listen to. One that’s bound to have you asking for more from the moment you hear Milae’s hauntingly beautiful voice echo through the opening guitar rift.

Katie Milae will be dropping ‘Molasses Skies’ on August 26th 2022, just in time for her East Coast Tour with support acts Ella Fence and Beau River. Milae says she is excited to showcase her new sound along with some new tracks written through her own struggles since uprooting her life from Adelaide to the Sunshine Coast.

The tour kicks off on August 26th at Solbar with Ella Fence opening the show and will move down the East Coast of Australia to Coffs Harbour before returning Milae “home” to slow, sunny Mudjimba.

After a long hiatus from travelling in any capacity, Milae says this tour will be the therapy her gypsy soul has been craving - so expect to hear and feel a whole lot of passion and storytelling poured into her shows!
